Grist
Autumn Leaves . . . From Jane McDonough, Principal October 14. 09 So Autumn is arriving for real as I write this, as in rain expected, clouds forming and the temperature moving away from perfect to a bit cool depending on your background. For those of you who hail from Minnesota it is still balmy out, but those southern California folks are starting to break out their slankets- or is it snuggles? Our intrepid 5th graders are up at Walker Creek as I write. Here at Old Mill we welcome the opportunity to bear down on the real reason we all read; rainy days! We get to be present on those stormy days when there is a lovely hum in the room as children snuggle down in their comfortable spots and devour literature, poetry, non-fiction and all the other delights of text. In addition, math games, board games, puzzles and practice go well inside the darker corridors we have in the late fall, not to mention exploring through maps, social studies resources and our glorious library.
The central tasks of elementary school include learning to read, write and compute, but they happily include learning to love all of those things as well as sparking ongoing curiosity across the board. Thanks for bundling up those wonderful students and sending them our way ready to learn and love it! The next few weeks bring Halloween- don't miss the parade!- and shortly thereafter (November 9- 20) our two weeks of shortened school days and parent conferences. Teachers prepare throughout the first trimester to provide parents with significant information about their child's progress in each class and each subject area. The conferences are a time when parents and teachers get a quiet period of time to discuss the work of the children. It is good to remember a few things when preparing for conferences from your end as parents: 1. Respect the time frame. Remember that teachers have many families to see, and have spent lots of time developing a working schedule. Stick to the time you are provided, and be ready to stop and move on when it is time. Once the time frame is disrupted other parents must wait or lose time allotted to them. 2. Have your questions written down so that you remember to ask them. Teachers will have lots they want to share, so if you have your issues clearly established, and you remember that you have to share the time you have to work with, both you and the teacher will feel that you have had enough time to do a good job in this very important discussion. 3. Listen carefully. Teachers may have important information that you need to hear, but which may not always be what you want to hear. We are all focused on student learning and the continuous improvement that is part of learning, but learning does not occur in a vacuum and there should be bumps on the road. We are here to help point those bumps out and get over them, not eliminate them. Our students learn best when they discover what their best strategies for learning are; this often means we have to get out of the way when they make mistakes and look instead at helping them notice those times when the mistakes either don't happen so often or aren't so difficult. The mistakes themselves are learning opportunities. 4. What are the homework habits of your child? What is your home schedule's effects on the child's reading or other homework time? We know that every family's needs are different, and are interested in knowing how we can help and advise in making sure that the learning and study habits your child is developing are good ones. Sharing your experiences with this aspect of school can be very enlightening. 5. Some of our teachers will be using our district's pilot progress report in this marking period. There will be information provided to you at the conference if this is the case, but in a nutshell, the district has been working toward a standards based report card for some time, and we are finally getting it out for use and refinement with teacher volunteers so that it can be ready for complete roll out in the fall of 2010. We are very excited about the improvements this report will provide in terms of clarity in our communication of expectations, and the integration of the technological capacity that the district now has to keep the data stored, available and accurate.
Thanks to so many people for all that goes on in this window of time; LAPATHON!! BOOK FAIR!! GREEN TEAM!! LUNCH PROGRAM!! DROP DON'T STOP!! ROOM PARENTS AND CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS!! Every day at our school includes all of our spectacular community. We are all grateful for the community we create with our collaborative work.
Our staff development day on the 16th will be exciting for us as a staff as we will all be taking courses delivered by our local district experts- teachers- on the use of technology in the classrooms. Teachers from the district TLC.org team have worked together to make the day have something for everyone, When we get back to school we will have our lunch and view the Book Fair so that teachers can make selections for what they might use in their classrooms, and then we will all gather to share the knowledge we have gained in the morning sessions. So often we get information but have no time to actually use it right away, and share it in a way that will help us retain the information, so we are all very pleased with the plan! Enjoy the beautiful fall in Marin, and thank you for your support of Old Mill School. By the way, make sure everyone you know is REGISTERED to VOTE! The coming election means so much to all of us! See you at the Book Fair, and the Halloween Parade!

Emergency Preparedness at Old Mill School
Hey Old Mill Parents! Ever wonder:
... what's in the giant metal container on the playground near the bike rack? ... what EPC stands for? ... why the emergency cards are so all-important at the start of each school year?
It's time to stop wondering and find out for yourself! This October marks the 20-year anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake and it's a great reminder to get your family and our school prepared. EPC stands for the Emergency Preparedness Committee
and we will work in conjunction with this year's lapathon to show
parents what we are doing at Old Mill School to get ready and keep our
student body safe and prepared.
On
Lapathon Sunday, the EPC will open the container so you can see for
yourself what's inside. This container houses all the important
first-aid, food and rescue essentials needed in the event of an actual
emergency. We will also set up a mock student release station so
you, as parents, can see exactly how to safely and securely retrieve
your child on the day of an actual emergency. For instance, you
must bring your photo I.D. During an actual emergency, you will
not be able to take your child without it. It's the law. Also, keep your parent emergency wallet card nearby to remind you which students you are authorized to pick up.
It's
good peace of mind to see how things work and to learn about the safety
plan Old Mill and the EPC have in place to keep our precious students
safe. So come by the container between 11:30 and 1:00 and take a
look. Student release will be set up at the Lovell Street entrance at
the bottom of the steps at the same time. This is where the
student release will be in the event of an actual emergency. And
in fact, this will be the only available entry into the school during
an emergency.
Get ready. Get prepared. Get familiar
with what we're doing at Old Mill School. See you at the Lapathon. -
Andrea Concannon and Jen Larson, Emergency Preparedness Committee

DROP DON'T STOP - AN OLD MILL TRADITION
Hello
to all Old Mill Parents! As you may be aware, the Drop Don't Stop
(DDS) program began on the first day of school. This self-run
program was created by the PTA a few years ago to assist parents with
dropping off their kids at school and to end the before-school car
congestion. Drop Don't Stop allows parents to drop off their
children at the curbside in front of the school in a safe manner under
the supervision of parent volunteers.
Each
classroom will be assigned a week of Drop Don't Stop two to three times
per year. (Kindergarten classrooms do not have to
participate.) This is a very fun and easy way to volunteer!
The Drop Don't Stop committee will greet the children for the first 2
weeks of school. Classroom rotation will begin 3rd week of school
starting with Room 12. The schedule will be updated in "The Creek" each
month. Please volunteer to keep this program running successfully.
Please remember these safety rules when dropping off (or picking up) your children at Old Mill School:
1) Kids should be buckled in their seat belts, and ride in the back seat for safety. 2) When dropping off your children at Drop Don't Stop, have your child/children ready to exit
the car with all of their necessary school "stuff." (This is not
the time to stop your car, and dig through your car or trunk for wanted
items). 3) Please pull up all the way to the front of the line to keep traffic moving. 4) Do not bypass
the Drop Don't Stop zone in front of the school (marked by cones) by
pulling into the red zone on Throckmorton. DO NOT stop in front
of the DDS zone near the curb of Throckmorton and Old Mill streets. 5) Never double park to let your child/children in or out of your car. It is very dangerous and also affects the flow of traffic. 6) Aside from our parent volunteers, only 5th grade students
are permitted to assist in opening the car doors. It is a
privilege for the fifth graders, and potentially dangerous for younger
children. 7) Please use the crosswalks. Do not teach your child/children to cross in the middle of the block. This too is potentially dangerous. 8) Please be patient
with the sidewalk construction and do not stop where posted not to. We
will all enjoy the safer crossings when the work is finished. 9) Please be considerate
of our Drop Don't Stop volunteers and other drivers. Remember,
their time is just as important as yours! Many Thanks!
If
you have any questions or concerns about the Drop Don't Stop program,
please contact Michelle Bell at michellejbell@hotmail.com or 415

Psychologically Speaking
Jobs and Allowance
From Claudia Trinklein-Engman October 2009
Kids
and their need or desire for money seem to go hand in hand these
days. How they get it is sometimes controversial. Some
parents simply hand it over with no strings attached. Others make
their offspring work for it. Still others assign appropriate jobs
for their kids with the understanding that there will be no
remuneration as such; yet, the youngsters will receive some kind of
weekly or monthly allowance. Other parents may specify where
portions of the allowance must be spent e.g. a portion needs to be
saved, or certain items such as candy are to be paid for by the money
received by the child.
However
you as a family handle the issue of allowance and/or jobs around the
house, there is incredible importance, socially and psychologically,
attached to the concept of chores/jobs and money. Children, even
at a young age, need to be a vital part of a "working" household.
Having a specific job or chore builds self-esteem, personal competence,
purpose, and a sense of pride in a job well done. The idea of
follow through and understanding/accepting directions is so very
crucial in all aspects of a child's development. It applies to
getting the job and/or chore accomplished as well. If it is
agreed upon that Alex will take out the garbage, you may need to remind
him that that is his job in this household. And as a matter of
fact, the rest of the family is counting on Alex fulfilling his
agreement. Your follow through helping him remember his follow
through is vital. Try not to get into arguments when Alex is
reluctant. Repeating the agreement should get him back on track,
especially if your reminder is clear and to the point.
The
independence of money is very important. It fosters age
appropriated separation and individuation for the child within the
family structure. Some children are natural entrepreneurs and are
able to begin making their fortunes at a tender age. Others need
encouragement. Jobs around the house are a wonderful
beginning. By 6 or 7, if you feel that your child is ready (
either by expressing an interest or by your assessment of his/her
social and emotional ability ) to find "employment" outside of the home
in addition to "employment" within, by all means encourage it!
Lemonade stands, dog walkers, flower waterers and cat feeders for
vacationing neighbors are a great start. Foster your child's creative
spirit. It will do wonders for self-esteem and perhaps your
billfold!
Reward
your child verbally as well - not just financially. Let him/her
know how proud you are of his/her accomplishments and familial
involvement. You might even decide to "honor" your child or
children's help by doing something special as a family. After
all, when everyone pitches in, things get done much more quickly and
deserve some recognition. Alex will not only have money in his
pocket, but a smile upon his face.

year, more than ever, we have more work to do. This means that starting

help us by putting kids first and helping Mill Valley kids reach their
full potential! If you'd like to avoid the call, and save our volunteers some time, make your donation today by visiting www.kiddo.org
or calling 389-7789 to arrange a payment plan. You can also mail your
contribution to Kiddo!, 409 Sycamore Ave., Mill Valley, 94941.

programs as well as library and classroom aides are counting on your
support!

It Takes A Village, in partnership with the Mill Valley School District and the Tamalpais High School District is sponsoring a chapter of Project Eye-To-Eye.
As a national mentoring program, Project Eye-to-Eye matches high school
students with LD/ADHD, acting as tutors, role models and mentors, with
elementary and middle school students with LD/ADHD in order to empower
these students and help them find success.
The experience of art
empowers students to develop their strengths and validates the unique
gifts that are too often ignored within a traditional educational
paradigm. As philosophers such as Maxine Green have explored, the use
of art enables both students and mentors to participate in a dialogue
about social and personal change, empowering students to envision a
different educational experience for themselves and ultimately their
community.
Project Eye-To-Eye exposes students with LD/ADHD to
high-end art projects designed by professional artists. Annually,
Project Eye-To-Eye's Artist in Residence, a working professional
artist, designs a thematically and technically sophisticated art
curriculum that is distributed to each chapter.
The 2009-10
pilot program, made up of students selected from all five Mill Valley
elementary schools and the middle school, will run on Thursday
afternoons at the Strawberry Point Learning Center, culminating in the
Spring with an art show. This special program was made possible
by a grant from the JS Foundation.
For more information about Project Eye to Eye, please visit www.projecteyetoeye.org or contact Ross Buffington, parent coordinator, at ross@itavmv.org.
